Tanning Week
Kursen är fullsatt. En anmälan ger dig en plats på väntelistan.
21–28 October 2026
This course will be taught by traditional Master Tanner Hanna Nore from Finland. The course language is English, Svenska and Suomi.
During theses 8 full days we will work on a variety of animals, skins and tanning techniques.
But before committing to long, intensive days in the tannery, we will start with a very special visit to the National Museum of Helsinki. With Hanna amongst us, we will be able to see and learn about traditional Fur and Skinclothing (seal and bird parkas among other things).
After that heading to the island, ready to roll up our sleeves…
You will partner up with someone to dry scrape a moose skin in a frame, turning it into moose buckskin using brains. We will tan sheep balls using different barks while learning about their different qualities.
You will learn how to tan a beaver tail using tannins and how to fat tan a badger, which asks for a little different approach compared to other fur animals.
We will dive into fat-tanning fish skins and then dyeing them using plants and mushrooms from Finnish nature.
As we will spend a night sleeping in a local Viking village. Next to some cultural experience (and sauna) we are there for smoking moose buckskins in style!
Of course, we’ll do this the traditional Scandinavian way and learn from one of the region’s best traditional tanning masters, Hanna Nore, author of the book Tanning Game.

You will leave this course with a hand full of tanned skins:
- half a moose,
- a beaver tail,
- a badger,
- fish skins in different colors,
- two sheep balls
And the knowledge to tan more hides yourself!
